The term Bokeh comes from a Japanese word that means “blur”. In photography, it’s used to describe the blur or the quality of the blur in the out-of-focus regions of an image. This can be achieved by taking pictures with a shallow depth-of-field. Bokeh is most noticed when points of light or highlights are part of the blur. A few weeks ago, we showcased web designs that made use of the color yellow. Along those same lines, this week we are focusing on another warm and bold color, one that definitely has lots of impact. This inspirational showcase is all about the color red. Red can have several meanings, and a few of them even contradict one another, such as love and anger. Despite how the color red is being used in a design, there is one thing for certain – it can definitely get people’s attention. Whether you’re designing a user interface for a website or an iPhone app, it’s always a good idea to start with a wireframe. It can be a big time saver if you’re able to nail down the placement of major layout elements early on in a project. There are a number of wireframing applications out there, but a lot of user interface designers like to start out on paper with sketches of what things might look like. With so many tools available to quickly create digital wireframes, some may argue that this is an unnecessary step in the design process. But I think the free flowing style of a sketched wireframe or mockup can be refreshing. Besides, there’s nothing like good ole pencil and paper to get the creative juices flowing.

Letterpress printing has been around since the 1400′s, but we’ve seen a revival and renewed interest in the art form in recent years. People have fallen in love with the added texture and depth that letterpress can give to a printed piece. Here on WDL, we’ve showcased letterpress business cards, but letterpress also works well for other types of printed material, such as invitations. Invitations need to look great in order to entice the recipient to attend an event, so the rich quality of letterpress printing is a great way to make a big impression. A website can hold lots of information, so a big issue is making sure the most important information gets the attention it needs. A good solution to this is using a slideshow on the home page to highlight featured content. What makes the slideshow so great is its ability show several pieces of content within a limited amount of space.
