Picking any old shopping cart is easy, but finding the right one can be a herculean task. It’s not about finding the best; it’s about finding the one that’s best for you.

Magento

Magento is a free open source shopping cart with an impressive depth of features. For those looking for an enterprise grade ecommerce platform, it can be a serious option. It comes with multi-store as standard, flexible pricing functionality and a hierarchical administration and permissions system to support multiple users. With Magento Connect, it’s possible to install a host of quality modules to add additional functionality.

Magento’s additional functionality comes with a price: reduced usability. If you’re looking for the simplest shopping cart, and don’t need all the bells and whistles, you may find yourself feeling better satisfied with another option. Magento also requires more sophisticated programming skills than some competing carts. For smaller operations, the hosting requirements can be quite cumbersome.

Oscommerce

The software is free and open source, existing since March 2000. In August 2008, it powered over 14,000 online shops. In June 2009, that number is closer to 12,000. While Oscommerce’s popularity may be in decline, that’s not to say it might not be the right solution for you.

Oscommerce is often criticised for having too complex code. This can make changes difficult and laborious. However, it has a strong community that provides free support and its extensive range of modules can help you to achieve an optimum solution.

Zen Cart

Zen Cart and Oscommerce share a lineage. Using Oscommerce’s code, Zen Cart became a standalone project. And, similar to its cousin, Zen Cart is free and open source. While Zen Cart and Oscommerce have many of the same advantages and disadvantages, Zen Cart has demonstrated better competence and direction.

PayPal Shopping Cart

While PayPal’s Shopping Cart is free, it comes with two main catches. Firstly, you have to process payments with PayPal (which is rarely the cheapest option.) Secondly, PayPal tries to encourage each of your customers to sign up for a PayPal account and could damage your conversion rate in the process.

If you want to have a PayPal payment option, you do not have to use PayPal’s shopping cart. Most leading shopping cart options come with a PayPal payment option, which is testament to its ubiquity.

PayPal’s cart is lacking in features and sophistication. Its true benefit comes in its ease of set up. All you need to do is copy and paste code which directs visitors off your website onto PayPal’s.

Google Checkout

Google Checkout is similar to PayPal in its simplicity and ease of set up. Code can simply be copied and pasted into your website, or you can integrate Google Checkout as a payment option into another cart.

PrestaShop

PrestaShop is a free and open source shopping cart that is aimed primarily at small and medium sized businesses. While it was started in France, the project is fully supported in English as well. A key feature of PrestaShop is PrestaStore, a website selling themes and modules for website customization.

PrestaShop is lightweight and has clean code, giving it a key advantage over some of its competitors. The software also comes with a high degree of flexibility around pricing and back office administration requirements.

Despite that, PrestaShop is still seriously lacking in some areas. Firstly, there is a lack of templates and modules available compared to some of their competitors. And, secondly, support could improve too. With time and growth, both of these issues could improve.

Shopify

Shopify is a hosted solution that is simple to set up. For those who do not want to manage their own hosting and security, Shopify will take care of that on your behalf. The cart comes with a good range of templates and designs can easily be customized. The shopping cart software has a strong feature set; you can also access modules and applications developed by others.

With shopify, you will always be tied to the company and their platform. Another disadvantage of Shopify relates to their pricing policy. Prices range from $24-$699 per month with a transaction fee of 0%-2%.

Wordpress was first released in 2003 as a content management system intended for bloggers, and today is regarded as the most popular blogging software available. Wordpress is constantly being upgraded with great new features that make it possible to use it as a full website CMS instead of just a blogging platform. Many blogs and even large business sites are using Wordpress as their CMS: CNN, Wall Street Journal, Nikon, Pepsi, etc. No question about it, Wordpress 3.0 has extended the possibilities for creating a full website with a user-friendly CMS for clients.

The full release was set for May 2010, but as of the end of May it hasn’t come out yet and it’s looking like it will be early June before it’s fully released. For this post, Wordpress 3.0 Beta 2 was used, and you can download that by going here.

New Menu Management Feature

In my opinion, this is one of the most exciting new features with Wordpress 3.0, and it’s included in the default installation. Before this, it was possible to create a dynamic menu with some plugins and/or Wordpress ninja skills. But it was never very easy to accomplish and now they’ve made it super simple.

You can add pages, categories, and even custom website links. With the custom website links option, you could link straight to a post, another website, whatever you want. It’s very user-friendly and setup similar to the current sidebar widget area where you can easily drag and drop to customize it just the way you like.

Custom Post Types

Currently, you can only create pages and posts with Wordpress. In 3.0, you can create your own custom post types, and set up the appropriate fields to go along with each. When a user chooses a new post type, something like a Podcast, they will just add a podcast, simple as that. You don’t need to walk your clients through a complicated process and explain why they need to add a new post for a podcast and then click on a certain category and fill in a certain custom field. It’s one step now, and clients will love the simplicity. It does require the use of a plugin, but before it required much more work to setup.

Multi-User

Wordpress MU has been around as a separate entity for a while but will now be integrated in Wordpress 3.0. MU allows you to maintain multiple sites from a single admin panel. It’s great for anyone that runs more than one site or blog and would like the simplicity of logging in once and maintaining them all from one place. This is especially helpful if these sites share content, templates, or plugins. One installation means less work and less time to create the same thing.

This isn’t completely setup in the default installation, but it’s fairly easy to get it up and going. First add this line to wp-config.php.

Now “Network” will appear under Tools in the main menu. Once there, fill in the Network Title, Admin Email Address and press Install. Wordpress gives you the option to set these sites up under sub domains or sub directories. If you’ve installed this version of Wordpress in a sub directory or you’re using localhost, Wordpress requires that you use sub directories.

Other Noteworthy Features

You can now choose your own username and password in the installation process, no more auto generated passwords using the admin username.

The new default theme, Twenty Ten, is much nicer. It’s clean and lightweight with minimal style attributes. I don’t use the default themes myself, but it’s still a nice feature to see.

Wordpress has moved leaps and bounds with this new version and I’m excited to see where it’s going in the future. These new features certainly help us deliver a more user-friendly CMS to clients with less hassle and headache in the setup process.

UI.Layout

This plugin let’s you build full featured and fully skinnable containers. The container can be set to draggable, resizable, collapsable and minimizable.

The project aims at providing web designers with a way to use the W3’s CSS Template Layout Module today. As a jQuery plug-in, the script parses a given set of CSS rules and displays the content as indicated in the specification. Options include the ability to select the CSS parsed, as well as an optional prefix to use for the CSS rules. Specifying a prefix allows style rules that are interoperable with a possible future browser implementations.

Masonry

Masonry is a layout plugin for jQuery. Think of it as the flip side of CSS floats. Whereas floating arranges elements horizontally then vertically, Masonry arranges elements vertically then horizontally according to a grid. The result minimizes vertical gaps between elements of varying height, just like a mason fitting stones in a wall.

Columnizer

Columnizer will automatically layout your content in newspaper column format. You can specify either column width or a static number of columns.

jQSlickWrap

jQSlickWrap forces text to wrap around the contents of an image, not just its bounding box as it does when you use a float with CSS.

Equal Heights

Equal Heights loops through the top-level child nodes of a specified element and sets their min-height values to that of the tallest.

js-columns

js-columns is designed to help with the creation of newspaper-style column layouts in HTML. While CSS3 has a variety of column-style properties, these are not yet widely implemented, and none help with the creation of page-based layouts.

jLayout

jLayout provides four layout algorithms for laying out HTML elements in web pages. This plugin allows you to lay out your elements with as little code as possible, and behaves correctly when used with margins, padding and borders.

Creating a mobile version of WDL has been on my to-do list for a while now, but yet there is still no mobile version of this site. Sensing that I’ve been putting it off for far too long, I’ve started to do research on the best mobile solution for Web Design Ledger. I’ve found that there are a number of solutions out there that make it easy to go mobile with your website, but here are eleven of the best.

WPtouch

Wirenode

Wirenode currently hosts nearly 40,000 mobile webpages, and include in those are some popular brands like Reebok and Ford. With Wirenode it takes about 5 minutes to get a mobile version of your site up and running, and it gives you features like mobile widgets, RSS mobilization, and mobile polls and forms.

iBlueSky

iBlueSky is a brainstorming and mind-mapping solution. Collect and organise ideas you have at odd moments, then email the complete project in PDF and PNG formats to any contact. You can even print a hard copy of your work from the PDF file.

Jobs

Jobs has just the right features to make it a powerful time tracker, but none of the fluff, so it is intuitive and lightning fast to use. Each job features an hourly rate, flagfall, associated client and total time spent on the job (broken up into sessions that are logged every time you pause or restart a job). To make things even quicker, your hourly rate and flagfall are automatically set to a default rate, but can be overridden on a job by job basis.

HEX RGB Colors Guide

This application gives you an easy reference to RGB and HEX color codes right on your iPhone or iPod touch. This app is designed for anyone who deals with HEX and RGB Color codes when it comes to designing offline and online media of multiple types.

Session Manager

Based on what kind of task I’m working on, I normally keep a set of websites and web apps open at all times. Session Manager lets you save sessions of your opened tabs and windows, and to quickly re-open them whenever you like.

Auto Copy

Auto Copy streamlines the process of copying text. It automatically copies selected text to the clipboard and has options for copying as plain text; including the URL in the copied text; etc.

#grid

#grid is a little tool that inserts a layout grid in web pages, allows you to hold it in place, and toggle between displaying it in the foreground or background.

Gridmaker

Gridmaker is a handy tool for creating grid templates for use in Photoshop. There’s also a plugin.

960 Grid System

The 960 Grid System is an effort to streamline web development workflow by providing commonly used dimensions, based on a width of 960 pixels. There are two variants: 12 and 16 columns, which can be used separately or in tandem.

YUI: CSS Grid Builder

CSS Grid Builder is another tool that lets you design your own grid by specifying body width and number of columns. This one even lets you enter content for the header and footer. Once you’re done you can easily copy the generated code.

1 KB CSS Grid

The 1 KB CSS Grid is a simple, lightweight approach that doesn’t require a PhD. When server-side options for templating and sub-templating are limited, the grid can be used as an alternative page templating engine. Its convenient row and column syntax provide all the necessary scaffolding.

netProtozo: Grid Generator

Grid Generator allows you to design your own grid by specifying the usual parameters like column width, gutter width, etc. You can then download grab the css or a png of the grid.

Blueprint

Blueprint is a CSS framework, which aims to cut down on your development time. It gives you a solid foundation to build your project on top of, with an easy-to-use grid, sensible typography, useful plugins, and even a stylesheet for printing.

Typogridphy

Typogridphy is a CSS framework constructed to allow web designers and front-end developers to quickly code typograhically pleasing grid layouts.

The Golden Grid

The Golden Grid is a web grid system. It ’s a product of the search for the perfect modern grid system. It ’s meant to be a CSS tool for grid based web sites.

YAML

“Yet Another Multicolumn Layout” (YAML) is an (X)HTML/CSS framework for creating modern and flexible floated layouts. The structure is extremely versatile in its programming and absolutely accessible for end users.

Grid Calculator

Grid Calculator allows you to choose the font size you are going to use, and then select the number of columns, column width, and gutter width based on that base font size. As you fiddle with the dimensions, the total width is dynamically updated, so you can check that you haven’t gone over that magic 1024px.

Gridr Buildrrr

Gridr Buildrrr is a useful tool to help you layout your own grids.

Fluid 960 Grid System

The Fluid 960 Grid System templates have been built upon the work of Nathan Smith and his 960 Grid System using effects from the MooTools JavaScript library. The idea for building these templates was inspired by Andy Clarke, author of Transcending CSS, who advocates a content-out approach to rapid interactive prototyping, crediting Jason Santa Maria with the grey box method.

BubbleUp

With BubbleUP, images in a list will enlarge with a smooth animation when you move your mouse over it. Then, if you move the mouse out, it will reset to the original size with the same smooth animation. Imagine the Mac Dock effect, although this plugin’s effect is not awesome like that, it’s light weight for such a similar zooming effect.

Spritely

Spritely is a jQuery plugin created by Artlogic for creating dynamic character and background animation in pure HTML and JavaScript.

jQuery-Notes

jQuery-Notes is a simple and easy to use jQuery-Plugin that allows you to add notes to any image (even foreign ones) on your website or blog.

Quicksand

Reorder and filter items with a nice shuffling animation. Just specify source container and destination collection which will replace the source collection. New elements will appear with fancy scaling+alpha effect, deleted elements (non-existant in destination collection) will scale out and rearranged items will move to their destination positions.

YoxView

YoxView is a popup image viewer, built using jQuery 1.4. It’s simple to use yet quite powerful.

Key Features:

• Images are resized to fit inside the browser’s window
• Images can be pre-cached
• Multiple instances in the same page may be used, ideal for blog entries, for example.
• Fully configurable – each instance may have a different configuration.

TipTip

TipTip is a very lightweight and intelligent custom tooltip jQuery plugin. It uses ZERO images and is completely customizable via CSS. It’s also only 3.5kb minified!

jQuery Photoshoot

jQuery PhotoShoot gives you the ability to convert any div on your web page into a photo shooting effect, complete with a view finder.

jqFancyTransitions

jqFancyTransitions is easy-to-use jQuery plugin for displaying your photos as slideshow with fancy transition effects. It’s compatible and fully tested with Safari 2+, Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 2+, Google Chrome 3+, Opera 9+.

jQuery imageless buttons a la Google

This jQuery plugin is an attempt to recreate Google’s imageless buttons and prove that it doesn’t take a whole team of engineers and an endless cycle of code revision and quality control (their own words) to pull this off.

jQuery.sheet

jQuery.sheet gives you all sorts of possibilities when it comes to giving your web application a spreadsheet style interface with MS Excel style calculations.

TopUp

TopUp is an easy to use Javascript library for unobtrusively displaying images and webpages in a Web 2.0 approach of popups. The library is jQuery and jQuery UI driven in order to maintain cross-browser compatibility and compactness.

jquery mb.extruder

This jquery component let you easly build a sliding panel where to insert any kind of content; it has builtin all the functionalities for managing menu lines and sub panels with accordion effect. It can get the content via ajax and therefore you can dynamically build it by passing DATA via request using the metadata attribute settable on the extruder container.
