Portfolios can be designed in several forms, specially those related to design, photography and other creative professions. The most traditional ones show pro eminent typography to attract attention and explain what is that the client/user is reading/seeing. The most contemporary one can show huge background images with a couple icons to help you navigate, while others can show minimal and clean design with some links to take you where you want. Typography is an art form rarely covered in the spotlight. Web designers too often indulge into page graphics and CSS effects. Ironically page text is what carries the information you’re trying to spread, thus should hold much higher importance to your visitors. I find the problem isn’t with a lack of interest but a lack of knowledge on the subject.
When discussing typography there are many aspects concerning such a topic. Aside from font families you’re dealing with serif/sans-serif typefaces, weight, kerning, leading, and similar ideas. This article is meant to slowly introduce designers into the wacky world of digital type.
As we can find on Wikipedia, “Form refers to the shape, visual appearance, or configuration of an object.” And here I believe that this is also the perfect explanation… forms in web design are a way to gather information, but they must also take on a “form” or an appealing visual appearance in order to be effective. Many of us creative types spend a lot of time seeking out “inspiration”. In fact, if you’re like me it’s your job to find and write about art or other things that might spark artistic inspiration in the minds of readers. I’m not here to make light of that either, it’s what I do and I love it. However, the reason I put quotations around the word inspiration above is because many times in the blogging world we say things like, “we are your source for inspiration” or “check out this inspiring post” etc. as if further consumption of this or that will be the deciding factor in whatever you’re working on.
