Retro is a word that derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning “backwards” or “in past times”. I think extremely interesting that we look back and get inspired by designs produced a while back, or even some recent ones that use the retro style. Last week, Henry posted an article with 30 Fonts Perfect for Vintage and Retro Style Design and I simply loved the first font of the list, the matchbook typefaces. By the time I saw it I could think of several good ways to use it in web design, print design on even other ways. I was so inspired that I decided to do a selection of retro and vintage websites for our weekly web design inspirational post.
I really like retro and vintage stuff… websites, posters, print, adds, everything. I think it’s amazing how an ‘old style’ still get our attention and appreciation. Faking aged, printed media has been massive since the ‘grunge’ style first became mainstream years ago. Textured work with a vintage feel is still very popular, but more recently it’s the ‘new retro’ style that’s captured the imagination. This was actually a brief given to me by up and coming UK band Rapids! For some poster art they wanted. They wanted a couple dancing with the heads replaced by an embellishment of the famous yellow ‘Acid face’ and done in a retro, cut & paste style. (more…)
