Thanks for the great article. I am trying to focus on typography for my website, and had a fast question. Do you have a font size scale that you use? Or due you use a different scale for each project?

Thanks,
KC

Part of readability is using the simplest, clearest words possible to get your point across, and a particular pet peeve of mine is overly formal language - especially the word 'utilize.' Lots of folks think it's a more elegant way of saying 'use' - and that using bigger words when smaller words will do makes them sound better-educated.

Two things:
1. The reverse is actually true: Using smaller words instead of bigger words shows you have a command of your subject and you respect your audience. Think of your favorite profs in university - they often used very conversational language to get their point across.

2. I just found this out a couple years ago: 'Utilize' does NOT mean 'use.' At all! It means 'use in a new (in the sense of being pretty unusual, furthermore) way.' As in, "She was so fixated on keeping her hair dry in the rain, she utilized *the toxic-waste bin* as a hat!"

DO NOT take any of the above "Do nots" to seriously or religiously.
Especialy the one about a whole page of cufon distracting a viewer...That would totally depend what font you used..And the always use websafe fonts for body text and then promoting font stacks.
Another thing, if you add 5-6 pixels to your font size to get line height you will never keep a consistent baseline grid as larger font sizes would mean larger line heights. not that that's wrong of course...you just can't have both.

Title should be Dos and Don'ts.
