50 Retro and Vintage Web Designs to Inspire You

Last week, Henry posted an article with 30 Fonts Perfect for Vintage and Retro Style Design and I simply loved the first font of the list, the matchbook typefaces. By the time I saw it I could think of several good ways to use it in web design, print design on even other ways. I was so inspired that I decided to do a selection of retro and vintage websites for our weekly web design inspirational post.

I really like retro and vintage stuff… websites, posters, print, adds, everything. I think it’s amazing how an ‘old style’ still get our attention and appreciation. For this selection of retro and vintage web designs, you will see retro and vintage elements, fonts, images, colors, textures, etc. I hope you enjoy the selection. And of course, if you have a cool retro/vintage font site to share with us, the comments are open.

Some of these are very creative like The Dollar Dreadful and the Wayward Irregular. And some of these are disgusting and bloated. Good collection.

Retro for the sake of retro is never cool retro.

Some of these are slick. Others are just visual pollution that make me want aspirin.

The two best executions, in my opinion, are The Dollar Dreadful and the Wayward Irregular. Similar to these two (and extremely fun reading) is Lord Likely (http://www.lordlikely.com/), which you don’t have in your list.

(I would drop iso50, which isn’t retro at all. Replace it with Lord Likely. And no, I have nothing do to with the Lord Likely site.)

Maybe I’m missing something, but I’m not sure how iso50 is “retro.” At the very least, it’s the least retro of the bunch.

    Great collection, though. Thanks!

Nice collection – some lovely visuals to inspire.

The only problem (for me) is that the actual build/implementation of these is often shocking. Half of the Flash-based templates don’t even have a non-Flash backup version beyond a ‘you need to update’ message. Many of those that look nicest from a distance are a bitch to actually use./navigate due to over-reliance on pretty design over functionality. Would be nice to see a bit more focus from designers on usability – after all, nice pictures is a first impression, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, they won’t count for much.

I keep coming back to this list for inspiration and there are so many wonderful vintage/retro designs. But Media Boom is just about the most amazing design I’ve seen in ages. What an experience! I felt like I was back walking around in the 40’s.
